The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is considered a premier certification standard for the global textile industry in relation to the certification of the life cycle of organic fibers. The aim of the GOTS standard is to define requirements to address all aspects of the textile industry from raw material to final product.

Aim of Standards

The aim of these standards is to define requirements to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.

Scope and structure

These standards for organic textiles cover the production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, exportation, importation and distribution of all natural fibres. The final products may include, but are not limited to fiber products, yarns, fabrics and clothes.

The following standards are included in GOTS certification:

1. Source harvesting criteria where at least 95% respective organic fibers needed for qualification. 2. All inputs have to meet basic requirements on toxicity and biodegradability. 3. No toxic heavy metals, no formaldehyde, no GMO. 4. Environmental manufacturing practices in place. 5. Environmentally safe processing requirements. 6. Environmentally sound packaging requirements. 7. Labor practices in accordance with the International Labor Organization (ILO). 8. Dual system of quality assurance consisting of on-side inspection and residue testing. 9. Requirements surrounding exportation, importation and distribution of all natural fibers.
